The Fleming Construction Group’s 2024 Year in Review

2024 – A Year of Opportunity, Growth & Recognition

2024 was a record breaking and transformative year for FCG. It was a year in which we welcomed a new team to the FCG family, safely built a record amount of work from coast to coast, modernized our accounting and administrative functions and said goodbye to a dear friend and mentor. The late Jimmy Valvano said in his famous speech that ‘if you laugh, think and cry, then it’s a full day’.  By that standard, we had a full year!

As we reflect back on the ground we covered and the recognition we received for our work and expertise, we have to give credit first and foremost to our outstanding team. From field to office, the Fleming team is special. Our crews are made up of hardworking, highly skilled, talented individuals. They are the reason FCG is fast becoming a nationally recognized leader in delivering inspired construction services, and they are the foundation upon which all of our goals and aspirations stand.

That’s why this year, we’re starting our annual recap with a huge round of applause for our talented teams – our crews out in the field, our dedicated project management and superintendents, and our accounting, administration, and human resources departments. Thank you for your hard work, your dedication to the Fleming mission and vision, and your commitment to quality. Working in the construction industry is signing up for long days, hard deadlines, working in the elements, and staying until the job gets done. It’s a career that requires problem-solving, ingenuity, and intelligence. We’re fortunate to have some of the best in the business working on our projects and for that, we’re endlessly grateful.

FCG & Bluescope Construction Acquisition Finalized

In a year of big accomplishments, there is one that stands out in terms of impact on our business and growth potential and that is FCG’s acquisition of the Program Accounts and Construction Services divisions of BlueScope Construction, finalized in February 2024.

This acquisition expands FCG’s existing geographical footprint to include a new office and team in Kansas City, MO, and it supports FCG’s growth and diversification plans by adding experience and capabilities in the rapidly growing data center market.

The new Fleming Kansas City team has supplied and erected an impressive 6M+ square feet of structural steel, roof and wall cladding solutions for data centers across multiple client campuses in the US over the past decade, something few other companies in this space can claim.

FCG Makes the INC 5000

In August, we had the honor of announcing that we qualified for ranking on the INC 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in the United States. Making the list places FCG among some of the most successful entrepreneurial brands in the United States and is a testament to our capabilities in the large-scale commercial building segment. The ranking reflects our steady upward trajectory over the past several years and our evolution from a trusted local brand into a nationally recognized construction partner.

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of C. Ben Rainwater, on December 17, 2024. Ben was President of Rainwater Construction Company for 30 years, and during his tenure made a tremendous impact on the commercial construction industry, on fellow Butler builders, and on all of Rainwater’s long-standing customers. Our hearts are with Ben’s wife Marilyn and their sons as they mourn the loss of such an incredible husband, father, leader, and friend.

Fleming Steel Erectors

Locke Supply – 1.5 Million Square Foot New Construction

In partnership with VanHoose Construction, FSE built its largest construction to date by square footage – a 1.5 million square foot distribution center for Locke Supply in Oklahoma City. The build was FSE’s 5th Butler LogistX system featuring structural steel, Truss PurlinXT, and B-Deck. The structure was integrated with concrete tilt wall panels. Our team safely battled the elements to erect this structure on time with zero safety incidents.

“We can’t thank Jeff VanHoose and the entire VanHoose Construction team enough for selecting us as their steel erection trade partner on this historic project!  When tackling projects of this size and scale, the need for clear communication, subcontractor coordination, safety and attention to detail all increased exponentially. The VanHoose team was up to the challenge and I couldn’t be more proud of how our FSE crews performed. This was an all around positive project experience that we will look back on fondly!” – Justin Willett, FCG President

Tier IV Data Center – 265K Square Feet

This design-build new construction is a 3,200-cabinet data center using a modular component-oriented, rapid-deployment model developed exclusively for this client.

Services included structural design for the tilt-wall project, project estimating, project scheduling, materials procurement, on-site project management, on-site supervision, on-site safety, on-site quality control, concrete services, and steel erection. In addition, the team developed the proprietary roof design for the facility, featuring triple redundancy to ensure leak-proof operations at all times. Utilizing Butler Manufacturing’s™ proprietary roof systems, the patented roof is one of the many systems that allows the operator to sell space in its data centers.

The project took 12 months from groundbreaking to substantial completion. Facility achieved Tier IV Gold Operations certification from The Uptime Institute, the highest level possible for data center excellence at that time.

Fleming 8760

Facet Filtration Complex Reroof & Retrofit – 72K Square Feet

Facet Filtration enlisted Fleming 8760 to execute a roof retrofit that would solve an extensive leak problem, and connect various roof planes to improve the overall appearance of the building. They also needed a small vestibule demoed and rebuilt according to current industry standards.

The project required extensive engineering, multiple design meetings and numerous proposal revisions. 8760 installed a built-up structure over the existing uneven roof connection points to create a solid roof plane and close off a problematic internal gutter system, which was the source for the leaks.

The 8760 installation crew worked quickly and efficiently with zero safety issues to complete the project two months ahead of schedule.
