A Tribute to Raymond Miller Jr.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of longtime Fleming Construction Company owner
Raymond Miller Jr.
Ray Miller was known throughout Tulsa as a community stalwart, investing his time and talents in the service of his neighbors, friends, family, and fellow business owners. Throughout his life, he served on the executive board of directors of the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce, and as chairman of the Infrastructure Development Advisory Board for the City of Tulsa. Known for his huge heart and generous spirit, Ray was active in multiple local charities, most notably the Gatesway Foundation and Catholic Charities. A friend to many in their time of need, Ray sponsored countless students at Cascia Preparatory School, providing financial assistance through college for a number of young people – a gift with lasting positive impact for their families to this day and beyond.
As a businessman, Ray was a force of nature. Taking the helm as sole owner of the Fleming Construction Company in 1974, within just a few years, he built the business into a multi-state corporation that was soon recognized as a leading national contracting company for self-performing steel erection. Under Ray’s leadership, Fleming erected millions of square feet for the Wal*Mart Distribution Center program, while also forging lasting relationships through collaborations with local developers and companies, including Nordam, Ameristar, Webco, Kansas City Life, and nearly the entire Port of Catoosa, among countless others. During his tenure, Fleming became the company to beat in Oklahoma for manufacturing, industrial and distribution projects as he cultivated a position of leadership that continues to this day. As an industry leader, Ray served three terms on the Butler Manufacturing’s Builder Advisory Council and, in 2012, was inducted into the Metal Construction News – Metal Construction Hall of Fame.
Ray was a larger-than-life character whose love of competition helped him excel in academics as a student of engineering, in collegiate football for his beloved Notre Dame, for his country serving in the Army and later as a leader for the Tulsa community as a whole. Ray was devoted to his faith as a prominent member of the local Catholic community and built Cascia Preparatory School, where he served for decades as a coach and as the announcer during Friday night football games.
As a leader, Ray inspired and challenged us to do our best in work and in life. He always made time to listen and to help in any way that he could, with nothing expected in return. In honor of his hard work, leadership, and example, we continue to cultivate his legacy and his vision for the Fleming Construction Group.
We thank him and remember him for his heart, for his service, for his kindness, and for the solid foundation he built for this company.
